Indoor cats crave stimulation and a good view of the outdoors can greatly enrich their environment. A window perch offers your cat a secure spot to bask in the sun, watch birds, and feel mentally engaged. Instead of purchasing an expensive setup, try building your own cozy window perch with this simple, affordable guide.
Cats are natural observers. A window perch allows them to:
Engage in “cat TV” (watching birds, squirrels, and people)
Soak up sunlight, which supports vitamin D synthesis
Feel secure by observing their territory from above
Reduce boredom-related behaviors like scratching or overgrooming
1 wooden board (18–24 inches long, at least 10 inches wide)
Foam padding (1-inch thick)
Soft washable fabric (like fleece)
Heavy-duty Velcro or suction cups with metal hooks
L-brackets and screws (if mounting to the wall or sill)
Drill or screwdriver
Scissors, staple gun (optional)
Sand the board edges smooth.
Cut foam to match the board’s surface.
Place fabric over the foam and staple it to the bottom of the board for a cushioned top. Or wrap it tightly and secure with Velcro strips for easy washing.
Suction Cup Method (Non-permanent):
Attach two strong suction cups with metal hooks to the window. Use rope or paracord to support the perch from the hooks. Place the other end under the window sash for support.
Wall or Sill Mount (Permanent):
Use L-brackets to screw the board into the window sill or wall just below the window. Make sure it’s level and stable.
Ensure it's securely mounted.
Test by placing gentle weight (like a book) before letting your cat explore it.
Add a blanket or your cat’s favorite toy for comfort.
Always use weight-rated hardware that can hold at least 20 lbs.
Check suction cups or brackets weekly.
Never place the perch near blinds with dangling cords (choking hazard).
Clean the perch cover regularly to reduce allergens.
Place a bird feeder outside the window for safe wildlife viewing.
Add catnip or a sprinkle of silvervine to encourage initial use.
Rotate toys near the perch to maintain novelty.
A DIY cat window perch is an easy, inexpensive way to give your cat hours of stimulation and comfort. With a few basic tools and materials, you can transform a simple window into your cat’s favorite hangout spot.
